Wrong Brain Primary Points of Unity

This is a living document, and as such is subject to change. We exist in an ever changing world, and we must be open to making adjustments to adapt, survive, and eventually thrive in this world. All we have ever known are the systems passed down to us from our families and communities, and we will navigate our organization and relationships based on the shared values outlined in this document with grace and understanding.

Wrong Brain Mission Statement:

To provide a venue and outlets for emerging, unconventional and under-represented artists of all mediums in the Seacoast, New Hampshire area and beyond.

Trust

We trust in each other and ourselves to uphold our mission. We trust in each other, ourselves, and our community, because the governments, establishments and authorities cannot be trusted. 

No Prejudice

Racism, sexism, ableism, transmisogyny, homophobia, fatphobia, xenophobia, zionism, prejudice, and discrimination are detrimental to our society and will not be tolerated or promoted in any capacity. As under-represented artists, we know these prejudices in most other parts of our lives. We work actively to combat these prejudices in our work as individuals, as a community, and as official Wrong Brain actions. Freedom of expression is a means to liberate us from oppression, repression, and from having to adhere to forceful capitalist societal expectations. 

Anti-Capitalist 

We make art because it’s what makes us human. We sell art to survive in a capitalist society. Our lives, our bodies, our ideas, our art, are not a commodity. Though we must participate in the oppressive capitalist system, we do not support or condone it, in fact, we encourage its demise. We believe that capitalism, along with cis-hetero white supremacy and settler colonialist imperialism, are destroying our earth and humanity, and alternative paths forward must be learned and practiced. 

Anti-Establishment 

Wrong Brain was created as an alternative creative community outside of the traditional public education institution, and continues today as an alternative to the traditional art institutions such as commercial galleries, educational institutions, and predatory showcase schemes. While we may work on projects with city governments, schools or galleries, it’s collaborative and temporary, and the values of those establishments must be aligned with those outlined here. Wrong Brain does not get funding from nor will not seek out funding and/or sponsoring from organizations whose ethics, behavior, business practices, and mission statement we do not align with. Wrong Brain gets the majority of its funding from local sources.

Abolition

Wrong Brain does not cooperate with police or promote the carceral state. The prison industrial complex serves the same goal as white supremacy and capitalism: to uphold the status quo, keep the under-represented oppressed, and serve the rich and powerful.

Community

The mission cannot be fulfilled by a broken community, therefore we prioritize mental health, rest, communication, conflict resolution, and fun. We must support ourselves, one another and our community with respect and kindness. No person can do the work alone, and no community can do the work without its individual unique members. Wrong Brain emphasises the importance of empowering individuals to have a platform for trying something new, engaging with the public to understand why community and art are important and to give underrepresented artists and newcomers an accessible place to feel welcomed and supported.

Accessibility 

Art is for everyone. Ability, skill level, education, language, physical needs, distance, location, or finances should not be a deterrent to make art or participate in the artistic community. Wrong Brain strives to eliminate as many barriers from art making and the art community as possible. 

Horizontal organization

Wrong Brain strives for horizontal organizational principles to ensure fairness in decision making for voting protocols. We seek to keep each other accountable and that no one has more or less agency than the other. Wrong Brain strives to give access to its members in a way that allows for ease of access to complete objectives that are necessary for Wrong Brain’s continued sustainability and existence. Horizontal organization does not mean there is no structure, it means that everyone will have their opinion and perspective heard.

Queerness 

We view the world through a queer lens in opposition to the heteronormative status quo.

Love

All our work is an act of love. Love is the universal language that we share with each other, and that fuels us towards a more equitable world. To all those who have yet to come, and in memory of those who have gone, we love you, and will work to create a world you deserve.
